It has been quite a while since I last posted about book-related stuff here. Like I’ve said before, being a senior BS Physical Therapy student got me stuck with huge amounts of research and paper works. I don’t have the time to read leisurely, more so blog about books.
This week is a bit more stressful compared to normal since it’s our prelims week. Everyday, I have to read chapter after chapters of medical books and prepare for practical exams. It’s like my head is bursting with information and my body just want to stop for a moment and relax.
And so I did the only sane thing that I believe would help me alleviate this hell week’s heaviness: I went book-shopping! Well, more like book-hoarding, if you ask me. I went to the nearest mall and entered a bookstore. The minute I got it, I was already half elated. And yes, since I brought my whole wallet with me, I kinda went overboard with the book-buying. I got a total of 8 books including Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl, Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, and George Orwell’s classic: 1984. I was also able to complete my ASoIaF set by getting the last 3 books(Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings in the photo were bought last week). And I also bought the first two books in The Chronicles of Narnia series. I’ve read the already but I don’t have my own copy. So now, I started to buy them.
All in all, I had so much fun looking for these books. Although I still have two days for our prelims, I think I can manage now that I got my fix. What I am not certain about is the time I would be able to read all these books. With all the school work going on, I’d probably be able to open them on our sembreak, which won’t be until October. That sucks, but at least I know that I have my shelves stocked. :)

"Brienne’s story is an adaptation of a traditionally male narrative, one that usually sidelines or victimises female characters. She swears fealty to a woman, as male knights swear to their liege lord, because she respects that woman’s strength, her bravery and her kindness. She goes on a quest to save the beautiful maiden, but not to marry her or benefit from the quest in any way, but to return her to her mother. Because she cares for Catelyn, and because it is the right thing to do. It is a story of a woman, rescuing a woman, for the sake of another woman. It is a rare story where the mother, the young girl and the shieldmaiden are all given equal weight and worth. Brienne, despite taking on many stereotypically male traits, is not “one of the boys” or in any way dismissive of her gender as a group. She does not fit into the role that society has assigned for her, but she does not disparage those who do. She uses her strength and her skill to respect and help other women in ways that most men in Westeros would never even think to attempt, because she understands, more than any other knight, that women are truly worth something as individuals."

"There are many who know that without you, this city faced certain defeat. The King won’t give you any honors, the histories won’t mention you, but we will not forget."
Lord Varys to Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones S02E10: Valar Morghulis)

The Halfman, The Imp, The Ugly, The Undesired.

Fuck all those names. As far as I’m concerned, Tyrion Lannister is more than twice the man Joffrey will ever hope to be in his best dreams. Damn, if you ask me, Tyrion is the rightful King of the Iron Throne. He was scared to death and hesitant to fight the battle against Stanley’s fleet. I felt the fear in his eyes when he decided to take charge, yet he bravely faced the war. And what did the fake king did? He pissed his pants of fright and run back to mummy. What an idiot coward. Tyrion Lannister will forever be my lion.

Day 16 – Favorite female character

Daenerys Targaryen from the Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin

She is also known as Daenerys Stormborn, from House Targaryen, and the Mother of Dragons. She is the daughter of King Aerys II Targaryen—the Mad King—and Queen Rhaella.

Now, this particular series is one of my favorites. One reason is its depiction of the female characters. In the books, not all of them are useless damsel-in-distress type of women. In fact, a lot of them are powerful, courageous, and very strong-willed. Others seem even more mighty than knights and kings. And from them comes my favorite female character, Dany.

She is a heroine of some sort in the story. At the beginning of the series, her brother sold her to the leader of the Dothraki, a group of tribe-like barbaric nomads, Khal Drogo for an army of 10,000 in return. This was all part of the plan to take back what was theirs from the Baratheons, present family that rules the Seven Kingdoms. Of course, Daenerys cannot do anything against her abusive brother’s will and she was forced to marry the fearsome man.

As the story goes, Daenerys captured the heart of Khal Drogo and learned to love him truly. She accepted her duties as the Khaleesi(queen) of the Dothraki. She even learned to stand up against her loathsome brother. All was well until the dreadful death of Khal Drogo. She became devasted but instead of succumbing to her grief and loss, she grew braver and became in charge of the Dothraki. The once fragile and innocent girl grew stronger and learned to be a great leader.

And I guess, that was the reason why I really liked her character. It shows us that even the most abused and quiet person can do great things if only one learns to believe in their own self. She also proved that women can handle things and that they need not to be beside a man, just watching and observing at the sidelines. She took it upon herself to continue her deceased husband’s goal. Even when she knew that she’ll be facing armies and armies of men, Daenerys did not cower in fear. She did not let her pain and sadness weaken her. She used it as her strength. She went on with her life. Other than that, she was able to melt the coldest of hearts, her husband’s as one proof. Her kindness spread like wildfire throughout the Dothraki tribe. Even if half of the Dothraki men think that it was weakness, the others respected her for her pure heart.

I really hope that she won’t die in the series. I’m just halfway through the second book and from what I observe, Martin doesn’t care if the character is well-loved by the readers. Even Ned Stark, someone who seemed to be an important character, died. And I don’t want to lose this great female character.

Hello! i'm a little curious, what are your tracked tags ?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Don’t judge because of the gendrya tag. I know it’s weird and creepy but I ship them so bad. :))

TYRION LANNISTER. ♥

Never mind that he’s the size of half a man. The Imp, they call him. But who cares about that? With all his wit, his courage, his intellect, and his unfailing sarcastic humor, what’s not to love? Seriously, even from the very beginning, I have grown attracted to this character.

He is badly underestimated and misunderstood. He is considered as a nobody, unworthy of his family’s name just because of his physical appearance. And so he projects this high and mighty, drunk, whoring bastard of a character. But, behind all those seemingly hateful facades is just a man who’s hunted by pain and rejection. He experienced enough shit in his life that his main defense is to hide beneath his negative sides.

But I understand him very well. And that’s why I’m always bidding for his character. For me, he is more than twice the man his brothers can ever be. He is far better than all the other Lannisters in their kingdom.

Day 09 – A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

This book was the kind of book I would just pass by without really looking, when I’m in a bookstore. I don’t know, but maybe it’s because political dynasties and medieval war genres don’t appeal much to me. I just don’t fancy fighting and too much bloodshed in exchange for a crown or in this case, the Iron Throne.

But then my roommate aka fellow bookworm, Abby, forced me to read the book. She told me that it is good and that it’s not boring like what I imagined. Still, I did not budge. And so she gave me a copy of the first episode of the TV series adaptation. She told me to watch and give it a chance. So I did, and I was surprised because I immediately wanted to know more about the story. So in the end, I bought the book and read. In the beginning, I had a hard time catching up with all the different characters, houses, and the kingdoms. They were so many and I got a bit confused. But then I put my full focus and enjoyed the book even more. It was really different. The political issues were so similar with the present times. It was a good mix of battles, controversies, human pleasures, supernatural creatures, wit, romance and the disgusting greed the people have.

Truly, I learned how not to judge a book by its genre. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the future.

What sort of tv series do you watch ?

Uhm, I do watch a lot of TV series. But all of them are foreign since I don’t watch Filipino dramas. Here are my favorites:

Doctor Who

The Vampire Diaries

Sherlock Holmes (BBC)

A Game of Thrones

The Big Bang Theory

Grey’s Anatomy

How I Met Your Mother

Once Upon A Time

2 Broke Girls

Cheaper book finds.

As many of you already know, I am big on book hoarding. And yes, I frequent as much bookstores as possible every time I go out. So last night, I went to the mall to buy an alarm clock because my phone got stolen, which is what I usually use as an alarm. Again, the magical pull of bookstores overpowered my will and I went to NBS and Booksale.

I found Peter Hoeg’s Borderliners at Booksale. I am not familiar with the book, neither with the author, but I read the summary and it is a dystopian novel. It’s about an elite school with a peculiar set of rules and uses the children for some kind of bizzare social experiment. It somehow reminds me of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, so I decided to buy it. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the tag and it was priced at 45 pesos ($1.00)! And the book is at a good state, no dog-eared pages and the cover isn’t bent or anything.

And then I finally got into the Game of Thrones bandwagon. My roommate recommended it to me and said that it was good. I have also read a lot of excellent review about the series. I watch the HBO series and I must say that I like the storyline. So I went ahead and bought the first book. It was priced at 315 pesos (about $7.00) and then when I went to the cashier, it was marked down to 250 pesos. So I got about 20% off! Well, I guess I just have good luck with books. Which I do wish was also applicable in other aspects of my life.

So yeah, that’s that. Just 3 more exam days and I’ll be having my vacation. I can finally knock off some books from my to-read list! :D

NOMNOMNOMNOM.

A box of Oreos + 2 cans of Pringles + 2 packs of Hershey’s Kisses = AWESOME.

While everyone in our house have gone to our cousin’s house two blocks away, here I am with my munchies! I got them from my grandpa last night. He knows that I love these treats and I was so happy he bought them for me. And that teddy bear, oooh that cute teddy bear. I got it from one of my cousins. So now, I’m here, camping in my room since I got to skip mass a while ago. I pretended to be very much asleep because I really don’t go to church. It’s been like that for almost 2 years now. Anyways, I’m gonna watch Season 1 of Game of Thrones and later, I will get back to my reading. Wish me luck on resisting the fattening temptations of these goodies! :))
