Bow down to me for I am the queen of secondhand-books-shopping!
Hahaha. Passed by Booksale at the Festival Mall branch yesterday before going back home from our cousin’s baptism. I thought to check in for just a bit and voila! Look what I found! I got the first edition of JK Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard Hardcover. And I bought for just, wait for it.. Php60 ($1.50). It was a really good buy. The book is in a very pristine state save for the cover that is a little bent around the edges. And to think that it’s original price is around Php900 ($22.50).It’s funny because it was strewn aside with a bunch of children’s book by another customer. I spotted and it and immediately asked the woman if she was going to buy it. Luckily, she doesn’t have an idea what book it was and said no.  Oh yes, I am in such bliss.
Okay, that’s it. Just sharing my happiness with you guys. :)

2012 had been a good year for me bookhoard-wise. And honestly, I am very thankful for these books are the only treasures I am so emotionally attached to. And even if I don’t believe in heaven, if it really does exist, I think this would be pretty much close to that.

My Harry Potter Story.

Why do you still post stuff about Harry Potter?

Just get over your Harry Potter craziness already! It’s been, like, more than a year since the last movie came out!

Don’t you ever get tired of watching or reading Harry Potter over and over again?

You’re 19 years old, why the hell are you still obsessed with a children’s book?

It’s over, move on and find another book to love.

These are just a few of the comments or messages I get on Facebook whenever I post something Potter-related, may it be quotes, photos, vidoes or little facts. To be honest, I don’t feel irritated at all. I am actually surprised by their reactions. I mean, they’ve known all along that I am a die-hard Potterhead, and yet they still force these opinions on me. Like, do they really expect that I’d give up all my affection and love for all things Harry Potter just because they told me so? Haha. I think not.

I know that it’s quite difficult for them to understand, maybe because they haven’t experienced being attached to something for over a period of time, or that they don’t feel this passionate about things, or for other reasons I may never know. But once and for all, here is my explanation:

When you grew up interested and attached to one thing to the point that it became a very important part of your life, you can never just turn away from it no matter how long it has been since it ended. Much like in a relationship, when you’ve invested so much, spent every sweat, tears, and love for someone, letting go will never be easy. At times, it’s unimaginable. That is how the Harry Potter series is for me.

I got the first book as a present from my mom for my 6th birthday. At that time, I didn’t find it interesting since it was the first time I encountered a book with only a few pictures. You see, even when I started reading early, I was used to fairytales and storybooks filled with illustrations of every character and the events of each story. But then, come the year 2000 and I was then 7 years old, my mother brought me to theater for the first time. And together, we watched the first Harry Potter movie ever released. That was also my first time to watch a movie inside a theater. So for the 7-year-old me, it was truly a magical moment.

When we went back home, I frantically searched for my copy of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and asked my mom (actually, pleaded), to assist me in reading the book. It was just my luck that she agreed. So for days, we sat together, reading the book. Whenever I find a word I don’t understand, my mom would always explain it to me the best she could. It became our bonding session. Before we even finished the book, my mom found out that this is just one book of the series.

She then bought me the next 3 books in the Harry Potter series for my birthday since they were already available that year. From then on, I would wait impatiently for the following year, ready to receive the next book in the series. Through this, Harry Potter became the center of my entire childhood. Aside from growing up following Harry Potter’s adventures, it also became the thing that brought me and my mom closer.

So yes, the Harry Potter books might all have been published and all the movies may have been released already but that doesn’t matter to me. The power of this magical story still lives within my heart and all the others whose lives were touched by this wizard boy who lived through all the hardship fate has thrown his way. I knocked myself crazy with anticipation for the next book or film, cheered during all the quidditch matches, recited every incantation, laughed with every joke made by the twins, cried over the deaths of my favorite characters, rejoiced at each triumph, even swooned over the cheesy bits. In these books and movies, I have learned so much about life at such a young age. The Harry Potter series aren’t just words printed on paper or frames sewn into films I can easily forget. No. These books and films are priceless treasures I’ll forever cherish. They are precious bits and pieces that helped in molding a part of whoever I am today.

A Year In The Life Of: JK Rowling

I have watched this twice before, but I still have the chills. She will forever be my childhood hero, the person who made my life so much better with her exceptional literary prowess. No words can describe the entirety of my admiration for this amazing and brilliant person.

It really frustrates me when I see Fifty Shades of Grey in like the popular spots in bookstores

Probably the best use of that gif.

NOVEMBER BOOK HAUL

I know that November is hardly over, actually it’s just the second week, but I just can’t help myself. Maybe it’s because I finally have my allowance and I can splurge on books. Or maybe, I think that my book addiction is getting worse. Anyways, here are the books I got from Fully Booked a while ago:

  • The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling - When our queen writes a book, you buy and read it. That’s an unspoken rule. Well, for me. Of course, as someone who grew up following the Harry Potter series, I was excited of the prospect of a new book, by my favorite author, with a different genre. I know that this was released way back this September, but I was not able to reserve a copy. But as they always say, better late than never right? So yeah, I am really thrilled but a bit nervous to know how this book pars with her previous masterpiece.
  • The Hangman’s Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch - It is often said that judging a book by its cover is a sin that should never be committed by bookworms, but my goodness! When I caught a glance on this book’s cover, I immediately fell for it. And so I read the summary and got more curious as to what the story is all about. Apparently, the book’s central theme is witchcraft as part of human history. It focuses on the medieval era when sorcery and magic was deemed as work of the devil. It was a time when people are persecuted for alleged use of dark arts. I have to admit, I was hooked. I love witch lit and this one is based from the actual dark ages.
  • Slanted and Enchanted: The Evolution of Indie Culture by Kaya Oakes - Much like with The Hangman’s Daughter, what first attracted me to this book was its colorful and creative cover. But it wasn’t just the cover that convinced me to buy it. It was the subheading that caught me. “The Evolution of Indie Culture”. If you have been following me for a long time now, you would know that I am a huge fan of contemporary indie music and movies. I’m not even big on reading nonfiction but I really wanted to know more about this genre so I bought it.
  • Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman - This is a book I have known way before when I was still in my freshman year in college. I have read some of the stories found in this book when I borrowed my friend’s copy. I particularly loved Babycakes and Troll Bridge. I am not new to Gaiman’s writing since I have read Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Fragile Things. But his short stories are just weirdly interesting, like there are deeper meanings beneath each of them. And that’s why I think that’s it’s time I get my own copy and read them all.
  • Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo? by Ramon Bautista - This is a book written by one of my favorite local personalities in the industry of show business. I have been idolizing Ramon Bautista for his unusual wit and humor. It’s just different since his sarcastic approach on different issues have a realistic way of informing people about it. Since I’ve heard that he was publishing a book, I really wanted to get my hands on it as soon as possible. But, alas, during the book fair I attended last , the book was already sold out. So imagine my happiness when I spotted this at one corner of the bookstore. This book is a hilarious take on the Hierarchy of Need and how people get too caught up with their desires.
  • You Have To Stop This by Pseudonymous Bosch - I know that I had only been done with the first book in this series, but I wanted to complete my copies so badly. I haven’t bought this last book before because it was out of stock, but then I got my opportunity at last, a while ago, so obviously, it goes to my checkout basket.
  • The Magician by Michael Scott - Like the previous book mentioned, this is a book I bought because I wanted to acquire the whole series before even starting with one. I was supposed to buy the next two books, but unfortunately, the third one wasn’t available so I only purchased this, the second book in the Nicholas Flamel series.

So that’s it. Seven new books to add in my shelf. I know that my to-read pile has grown a lot and yet, I haven’t been able to knock off at least half of the books in it. Oh well, my problem now would be finding the time to finally read these babies.

Graduating Hogwarts
I knew! I should’ve gone to Hogwarts. My life would be so much better. Instead, here I am, being an average lazy muggle desperately hoping for my magical dream to come true. Oh well.

Look at what my friend, Abby, gave me as a post-birthday gift! It’s an official Harry Potter exhibition guide she bought from Singapore. It comes with the official replica of Harry’s Hogwarts acceptance letter. Apparently, she knew that I would totally be devastated and jealous if I knew that she went to the actual exhibit in Singapore. And she was right, I am immensely over-the-top jealous! But then she told me that the exhibit might go here in the Philippines anytime this year. So yeah, we made a pact to go together.Anyways, I really am enjoying this guide. Although I already knew half of the trivia found inside, it fells nice to reminisce my Potter journey. I really love how awesome my friend was for remembering me while she was in Singapore. She also bought a Slytherin necktie, which I am begging her to give me. But I guess it’s a little to much so I will be saving to get my own, and hopefully with the robes. Haha. I just wish it’s true that the exhibit would go here. I don’t have enough resources to get to London or to the Harry Potter theme park in Florida. But I swear, it’s the first place I’d go to once I already have a job.

I am supposed to be studying for Neurology and Pathology for our prelims tomorrow, but then I saw this and holy shit, I immediately closed my books. HAHAHAHA.
SLYTHERIN IS AWESOME!! I AM SO EXCITED!!

SLYTHERIN IS AWESOME!! I AM SO EXCITED!!

Since it has been exactly a year since the world premiere of the last Harry Potter movie, I would give two and a half hours of my time to re-watch the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, all over again.

“I open at the close.”

Day 30 – Your favorite book of all time

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling

Please do forgive the state of this book. I know that the spine is already cracked and the jacket is wrinkled and slightly tattered. But this is due to the fact that I have read this book a lot of times. And yes, it is my all time favorite book.

Of all the books I own and read, the Harry Potter series have been the closest to my heart since I grew up with it. Every year, I would eagerly wait for the release of the next book in the series. And the moment that this final book came out, I was in our school’s library at 6am to claim my reserved copy. The time that the book was handed to me, it felt like I was holding the most precious treasure in the world. I was so excited yet so afraid to finish it that I hesitated in turning the last few pages. I don’t ever want it to end. And like many other, I would give anything just to repeat the whole experience, wipe away all my knowledge of the whole series and reread the books all over again.

As to why I consider this as my favorite book of all time, I have a few reasons. First is that everything I had ever known from the first 6 books were changed because of the twists in this one. There were so many secrets unveiled and we see how much foreshadowing there was in the past books. It just feels so great to know the whole truth and the revelations about how the events from the very first book were connected to the end. All the mysteries were so systematically written and was very much the reason why I love the book.

Second is that this book is way more different the the former 6 because in here, we finally see our beloved characters are grown and mature people. They are not just kids hungry for magical adventures, but adults ready to give everything, even their lives, in order to save their whole community.

Third is that despite the almost very obvious and predictable fact that Harry must win and survive the battle with the Dark Lord, Rowling isn’t one to give an ordinary victory. The way it ended is not simple and certainly not a cliché or some sort. Harry’s victory is definitely action-packed yet hair-raisingly brilliant.

Fourth is that even when Rowling caught us off guard with all the tragic death of our most beloved characters in the book, she never denied us the happy ending for everyone. We all know that in every war, there would always be victims, innocent or not, and that’s what the author gave us. She didn’t stir away from the truth just to satisfy her readers. She knew that a lot of us would be disappointed but she still did what she imagined how the story would go. I commend her for that. And like I said, she regained our approval by giving the story a very great and blissful ending.

And lastly, I loved this book because of the strongest most powerful message it held out for the readers: love brings out the light even in the darkest of hearts. For those who have read the book, I guess you already know that Severus Snape is the best proof of that in this book. It shows that no matter how evil a person is, love, no matter what form, requited or not, will always flush out the rotting parts of our soul. It would bring out the very best in us.

And that’s it! I FINALLY FINISHED THE MONTH-LONG BOOK CHALLENGE! Hooray! I feel satisfied with myself. :)

Day 22 – Favorite book you own

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Wow. This is the second time that this book turned up in my book challenge!

My reason for selecting this as the favorite book I own is simple. It’s because this book is a signed copy. I almost chose the Harry Potter set but then this one won the special place in my shelf because John Green’s hand have swept over a page of it. The day I got this, I immediately opened the page with his signature and as embarrassing as it is, I rubbed my face on the little green-inked signature. I am just that crazy. I mean, hello, only the first 150,000 copies were signed and I was lucky enough to get one. How can this book not be precious? I just hope I can also get my Harry Potter series signed by JK Rowling in person. It would be the best day of my life when that happens, I am sure of it.

I wouldn’t die unless I have done ALL these things.

So I have this list inside my head of the things I would do before I let myself die. I swear to myself that I would hold on to my last few breaths no matter what, even when I am already an inch away from death, if I still haven’t done all of these things.

So here they are:

  • Go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando
  • Meet and have all my Potter books signed by JK Rowling
  • Shave my head
  • Get that two tattoos I really want
  • Meet and have a conversation with John Green and Hank Green
  • Punch Steven Moffat in the face (although meeting him would be more likely)
  • Meet one of the Doctors (Eccleston, Tennant, Smith) and have our picture taken at the TARDIS
  • Go to Greece
  • Have a baby (yes, not now but in the future)
  • Finish all the books in my to-read list

I know that some of these seem a bit too out of my league but whatever. I really want to do all this things and I don’t care how difficult they are to achieve. I swear, I would not die if I haven’t done everything listed in here.

J.K ROWLING’S NEW BOOK COMES OUT 27th OF SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR

LONDON (AP) — Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling says her first book for adults will be called “The Casual Vacancy.”

She says the book will be set in an English town called Pagford that is not as idyllic as it seems on the surface.

The book published by Little, Brown & Co. will represent her first post-Potter offering. She is credited with creating one of the most successful fictional series in history with the saga of the boy wizard.

The publisher said Thursday the new book will be available worldwide on September 27.

It will be sold as an e-book and also as a traditional hardback volume.

The publisher says the book will be “blackly comic.”
