Ate I'm an upcoming college freshman and gusto ko sana maask is BS Physical Therapy a good pre-med course? And what type of doctor ang specialization mo after one finishes it :)?

Hello! In my opinion, and a lot of others’ too, BS PT is one of the best premed courses out there. You will encounter a lot of subjects that are also part of the med curriculum and somehow, it prepares you for the actual med proper itself. BS PT also focuses on clinical application and hands-on interaction with patients and this is a big advantage when you would want to pursue medicine because you’ll know how to handle patients better. It’s like a head start. Also, (in UST, not sure for other universities) BS PT is the only program aside from Medicine which allows students to have human anatomy lab where you get to explore the human body through dissection of an actual cadaver. This may sound gross but it will really be of help if you want to take up medicine.

As for the specialization, you won’t have any yet after graduating from BS PT. You would still have to take 4 years medicine proper to become a general practitioner and about 3-8 years more if you want any specialization like Cardio, Neuro, Rehab med, etc.

Ate hello! Mahirap ba magphysical therapy sa UST :)?

Hello din! Ang masasabi ko lang, make sure na PT talaga yung gusto mo and desidido ka sa choice na yun. My advice: If you have other courses in mind and you think na mas compatible yun sa strengths mo academically, dun ka na lang.

Physical Therapy in UST is a very demanding course. Maaubusan ka ng oras for other things like socialization and leisure. In this course, you’ll experience DAILY quizzes and sleepless nights. Oh and sa mga di nakakaalam, dapat willing kang magsuot ng swimsuit sa harap ng buong class kasi every practical test, part ng uniform yun. There are treatments and exams na dapat exposed yung certain body parts mo so kailangan nakaswimsuit lang and cycling shorts. Speaking of practicals, dapat kaya mong makipagusap sa patient with the right amount of rapport kasi needed talaga.

All of these seem very stressful, pero in the end, lalo na kung gusto mo yung ginagawa mo, masaya din naman. Marami ding perks and PT and part nun is that it is one of the best premed courses you can take. Almost the same and curriculum ng 3rd year PT and 1st year Med sa UST. So malaking advantage. Plus, you get to know so much more about the human body and how things work.

Sorry kung masyadong mahaba. Pero yan yung full perspective ko sa PT in UST. Hope it helps. :)

First batch of books I got this new year! And for less!
I got the Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale for only Php300 ($6) and Steve Berry’s The Jefferson Key for free due to a book trade. I have an extra copy of Mockingjay and so I swapped it for the said book. I was so happy.
Now where did I get these awesome books, you ask?
Well, this time, the students of University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines are in luck for they can access these low-priced books easily. Other bookworms (sadly only Filipinos) can also avail books just by visiting this page:

WOOOH! Urbandub at Paskuhan 2012. ALWAYS AMAZING LIVE. I didn’t care that I was the only one in my group of friends who ran towards the grandstand when the band was called into the stage. And btw, we were at the back of the field, very far from the stage! I screamed, cheered and sang to all the three songs they performed and it was awesome! Gab Alipe is love. F*ck all the lovey-dovey couples snuggling and doing whatever else during the fireworks display. I had my fun while watching my favorite OPM band perform. Will always be a Dubista at heart. ♥ ♥ ♥

Okay. Someone just tried to go inside our dorm room a while ago. He was forcefully opening the door with his keys. I could hear the frustration as won’t open the lock and door wouldn’t budge. I thought it was just my roommate so I didn’t mind. Turns out, he got the wrong room. He’s supposed to be going into room 46 and ours was 36. Hahaha. Weird. It’s so early in the morning and that guy was already out of his head. I can still picture his face when I opened the door and told him that he’s in the wrong room. Crazy. :))

I would like to take this opportunity to give my condolences to a good friend, my year-long dorm mate, Cyrish Magalang. I went to her burial a while ago and I have to admit, I still cannot fathom what happened to her.
We talked to her parents and the police officers and learned about what really happened. Apparently she was reported missing Tuesday night. She came home from her work at SMX center. She went to the tricycle station inside our subdivision. The driver behind the tricycle she rode told the officers that a guy got on the back and before the tricycle moved, the guy transferred inside, beside my friend. We learned that they picked up another guy at the curve and changed route. The following evening, my friend’s mom received a call telling her that the body was found at an empty hut very far from their house. Cyrish was found with 49 stabs wounds, 20 in the chest and the others all over her body. She was also pounded in the head using a hollow block. She was dead on the spot. It seemed to them that it was an attempted rape, since her underwear was pulled down halfway down her legs. But the autopsy showed that she wasn’t insulted that way. Their conclusion was she might have fought these men that’s why they killed her.
Right now, the police and the news team from local broadcasting stations in the country are doing their best to find the suspects. So far they have one of them and he is currently being questioned about the said incident.
This is a really devastating and cruel event. I cannot imagine how some people could be so heartless to the point of inhumane. For the to stab her 49 times, that’s just too much. I just cannot imagine what her parents are going through right now. I keep thinking of what my friend did during this harrowing incident, her fear while she was being brought into that unknown place, her desperate plea for help, she might have even tried fighting them. She was all alone with no one anywhere in the vicinity. It was just all so unbelievable. We were just talking online two days ago, and now she’s gone.
Why are people like this? Isn’t there any good left inside their hearts to be able to do these kind of stuff? Why do they have to harm innocent people? Is their need that intense for them to be capable of such evil? Don’t they have a family of their own, a daughter perhaps, who might experience the same fate? Where are their souls? It’s just so unacceptable. I just hope they find justice for my friend’s death soon. It’s so unfair if they escape without any consequence.

STUDY HABITS

Since our prelim exams will start on Wednesday, I had to pause all my leisure readings and put away those wonderful books. Since our first tests on will be for Pathology and Therapeutic Exercises, I decided to start studying for Patho to knock off some weight from the combined bulk of coverage for the two. I also chose to start with it since I find it easier compared to Thera Ex. So here I am, past midnight, still studying. Here’s a little random fact on how I study:

  • I highlight important details on powerpoint lectures using different colored markers.
  • If there’s a book reference for that lecture, I would do the same and highlight on.
  • Then I compare the two and combine the details, then proceed on re-writing everything on a separate notebook.
  • And finally, I would read the ones I’ve written, all over again, for maximum retention.

It’s quite time consuming and tiring, but it really works for me. I’ve been like this ever since college and I think it’s great and helping once you find a study style that suits you. Oh and one other thing, I cannot study without my coffee boost.

Who says I can’t eat cold food during this cold weather?
Hahaha. This Double Dutch ice cream doesn’t seem so bad a company in this chilly night. I am stuck here in my dorm for too long and I am so fed up with noodles and canned food. I really wanna go home. But alas, travelling deemed impossible when the rain continued to pour. And so I bought one of my comfort foods which is available at the convenience store of our dorm (thank goodness!).
So right now, I’ve been a bum, watching movies on my laptop, hoping that the power won’t go out. I’m gonna be reading later if that happens. Yep, I’m pretty much stocked with books here in my dorm, and I can finally read them freely! How so, with the lights gone? Well, back to my handy flashlight, damned be my eyes. Hahaha. Anyways, this is how I look, all cuddled up with my favorite blanket with a huge pint of ice cream in hand. Hope you guys are okay, too! Have a nice stormy evening! :)

It’s been a crazy week for the Filipino nation due to the grave weather. Up until now, the raining doesn’t stop and a lot of street and cities are drenched in knee-high to waist-high floods. Being someone who dorms at UST, I’ve had my fair share of the flooded experience. And this is how it all started:
MONDAY
Classes got suspended at around 12nn
We decided to stay at my friend’s condo and have a mini drinking party and crazy games
The rain got harder and yet, it didn’t occurred to us that it’s already flooded
At 9pm, some of our friends decided to leave while Ella and I stayed because we know how high floods in UST can get
AJ and Abby told us not to go home anymore, so we stayed overnight at their condo
We had a movie marathon and watched National Treasure, Sex is Zero II, and If Only
TUESDAY
We were supposed to head back our dorm but then they said that the flood in Lacson and UST is above knee-deep
We went to SM which is directly in front of the condo to buy groceries
We also had our lunch there and then we went back to the condo
Out of boredom, we baked fudge brownies
While waiting, we played Monopoly deal and card games
We also had another movie marathon. This time we watched National Treasures 2 and A Dangerous Method
We cooked and ate dinner
Then we decided to crash for the night after an hour or two of conversations
WEDNESDAY
At around 9am, it was all sunny and no traces of rain but the flood is still there
We had our breakfast (corned beef + eggs) and then some chips
Ella and I were ready to go home when the rain poured again
We waited for it to somehow lighten but it didn’t
So we braved the rain and flood for we though that it might get worse again
I rode a tricycle from SM to my dorm at Lacson and the flood was really bad
It was still knee-high in some street and ankle-high in our dorm’s street
I ended up paying a hundred pesos for the fare
And so now, I am finally in the comforts of my own dorm. I had nothing to do plus I cannot go out, so I started reading Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. I hope this rain would stop for I am really afraid of the consequences it can give us. The UST Hospital and UERM are already low on diesel for their generators. The morgue on the first floor of UST Hospital is already flooded and bodies are floating around. The patients and staff are running very low on supplies. If this goes on, I don’t know how much more we can take. And to think that this all happened without a storm in our country’s area of responsibility. Damn.

Look at me! All prim and proper, ready to go to school. But wait for it.. CLASSES ARE SUSPENDED!
Just when I was about to get out of my room, they announced that it’s cancelled. :| Which sucks, since I’m already in my uniform and ready to go.
I know the suspension is for the safety of the others who are living near Manila Bay, which I think by now is already flooded. But then, I just think that they should have announced it earlier so that students won’t have to go through the motions and hassle just to get to school. Some of my friends are already here in UST and some are on their way. What a waste of money and time.
So yes, I am pissed, although I don’t look like it. HAHA. And yes, I feel that our supposed to be month-long sembreak would be cut short to make-up for these school days. And I don’t think anyone like that.

Summary of my first week back in University.

Last Tuesday was the start of our classes in UST. Actually there was a University mass held on Monday, but I never attend those mass. So, I was back in my dorm the day before to prepare for the said resumption of classes. So here’s what happened this past week, in bullets:

TUESDAY

  • Woke up very early for my 7:30am MedSurg Rheuma class
  • The professor was 30 mins late but when she arrived, she immediately started the lecture for our first topic
  • Our Neurology professor arrived on time and also proceeded giving us a 10-point pop quiz to see if we still remember the concepts we learned in Neuroanatomy last semester
  • I got a whooping score of 4/10. Haha. Not my best subject, obviously.
  • He also gave us a 3-hour lecture of our first topic

WEDNESDAY

  • No classes for our block.
  • Got up at 11am and had lunch with my new roommate
  • Spent time alone in my dorm fixing and organizing my stuff

THURSDAY

  • 7am class again
  • Clinical Education started off with an orientation
  • Had a 5-hour lecture on the introduction to clinical documentation
  • I was so sleepy and hungry
  • Only had an hour break after with my friends from other section
  • Had an orientation with Community-Based Rehabilitation for about an hour and a half
  • One of my professors in that subject is an eye-candy

FRIDAY

  • Had Therapeutic Exercises 2 Lec at 7am (again)
  • It was also a 3-hour review and lecture of all the topics we had last sem
  • Then we also had another 3-hour demo in Thera Ex 2 Lab
  • Got called twice. First, I was the patient and my prof was the PT. The second time, I was asked to demonstrate a certain exercise for a patient. (yes, my luck with random recitation is always like this)
  • It was announced that our professors in Ortho and PT 4 won’t be able to meet us so we were dismissed early (1pm instead of 7pm)
  • Had nothing to do so I watched the new Korean drama recommended by my roommate. (Finished 5 episodes)

SATURDAY

  • Instead of having Pathology and PT4 Lec subjects, our college had a General Assembly.
  • Had to attend because it was mandatory. (was very bored because it’s the 4th GA I attended since I was a freshman)
  • Went back home at around 1pm.

So basically, the first week was already packed and loaded with lectures and discussions. I thought that it would still be a “chill” week but I was obviously wrong. We already have quizzes piled for next week and a couple of homework. On top of that, I had my monthly visit last night and it sucks. I had cramps and a bad case of dysmenorrhea. Just a cherry on top of a very awesome week. NOT.

Please give me a moment to fully grasp how awesome and relaxing my next semester is going to be. NOT.
I mean, just look at that schedule! It sucks right? Well here’s what you should know: that’s actually the best possible schedule I can have as a 4th year student of BS Physical Therapy in UST. The other sections 7-hours-straight classes and 7am to 7pm classes for more than one day. I feel like I’m going to be so stressed this year.
You see, it’s not as easy to be a PT as what most people imagine. And again, we are not masseurs. Just look at our subjects! Especially that Clinical Education subject. What the hell are we supposed to do for 6 hours straight? But really though, those from the higher batch said that 4th year 1st semester is very challenging and brain-draining. And yes, it’s tough because we only have one year left before our year-long internship starts.
So I guess, hello bigger and darker eyebags and 2-3 hours sleep again. Not to mention, major stress. Haha. Not funny at all.

These photos are super late uploads. This was last December during the Paskuhan event.

I decided to put it here because I kinda miss hanging out with my friends. It’s always like this during vacation. We live far apart and it’s hard to plan for something when everybody else have their own family outings. Our schedules just don’t match. Plus I’m too broke to actually go to any party or out-of-town trip. I guess I just miss goofing around with them, talking about anything and everything under the sun. All the craziness and laughter we all have when we’re all together. At least I’ll be seeing some of them on Monday. I’m excited, somehow.

Oh well, this is just the nostalgic me is getting out and reminiscing. Haha. Forgive me.
