If I really do get a heart attack every time a good book is butchered by its movie adaptation, I would probably be dead by now.

I would like to take this opportunity to give my condolences to a good friend, my year-long dorm mate, Cyrish Magalang. I went to her burial a while ago and I have to admit, I still cannot fathom what happened to her.
We talked to her parents and the police officers and learned about what really happened. Apparently she was reported missing Tuesday night. She came home from her work at SMX center. She went to the tricycle station inside our subdivision. The driver behind the tricycle she rode told the officers that a guy got on the back and before the tricycle moved, the guy transferred inside, beside my friend. We learned that they picked up another guy at the curve and changed route. The following evening, my friend’s mom received a call telling her that the body was found at an empty hut very far from their house. Cyrish was found with 49 stabs wounds, 20 in the chest and the others all over her body. She was also pounded in the head using a hollow block. She was dead on the spot. It seemed to them that it was an attempted rape, since her underwear was pulled down halfway down her legs. But the autopsy showed that she wasn’t insulted that way. Their conclusion was she might have fought these men that’s why they killed her.
Right now, the police and the news team from local broadcasting stations in the country are doing their best to find the suspects. So far they have one of them and he is currently being questioned about the said incident.
This is a really devastating and cruel event. I cannot imagine how some people could be so heartless to the point of inhumane. For the to stab her 49 times, that’s just too much. I just cannot imagine what her parents are going through right now. I keep thinking of what my friend did during this harrowing incident, her fear while she was being brought into that unknown place, her desperate plea for help, she might have even tried fighting them. She was all alone with no one anywhere in the vicinity. It was just all so unbelievable. We were just talking online two days ago, and now she’s gone.
Why are people like this? Isn’t there any good left inside their hearts to be able to do these kind of stuff? Why do they have to harm innocent people? Is their need that intense for them to be capable of such evil? Don’t they have a family of their own, a daughter perhaps, who might experience the same fate? Where are their souls? It’s just so unacceptable. I just hope they find justice for my friend’s death soon. It’s so unfair if they escape without any consequence.

"We keep people alive on death row just so we can kill them later. We put prisoners on suicide watch so they can’t do themselves in before we can get the chance to put them on trial. That doesn’t make any sense. Why is it okay to put someone to death, but it’s not okay for those people to do it themselves?"
Michael Thomas Ford (Suicide Notes)

A peak on women’s life.

Imagine how it would feel to be a woman working in mine field full of men. A batallion of men who waste their time and energy harassing their female co-workers. Can you go on with your life if every single day, men see you as a whore, a toy or a slut? How can you stay strong when even your family cannot believe a word you say? How could you hold on when your children hates you for your guts and believe what other people say about you? What would you do when your friends cannot stand up for you because they are too afraid of what these men can do to get even? Would you stand there, be quiet and let it all go? Or would you be brave enough to stand up for what you know is right and true?

To be a girl and watch a movie like North country, is just too depressing. It is based on a true story about a group of women fighting for their rights. It shows us how unfair it was for women before certain laws could protect them. It will tell us that being a woman is not easy like what most men think. This movie will open our eyes and make us realize how much women can suffer in the hands of men.

The good thing is that, even if the movie shows the bad side of men, it also guarantees us that there are still select few who are otherwise. That some men can lower their pride and help women who are abused and taken for granted. It does not tell us that all men are evil. The movie teaches us that not all people are the same. Some will go their way just to help when they know that it’s the right thing to do.
