The blaring sound of the alarm shook her awake, remnants of her disrupted dream still left hazy patches on her mind. It was good dream, could’ve been better, she thought.

It’s the weekend and yet she’s already up early. With the rays of the awakening sun just starting to snatch peeks behind tangles of stray clouds. She was alone in her house, as always. It has been this way ever since, with her preferring isolation, finding solace and basking in the silence of solitude. But today, she was to go out with her scant friends  and pursue her meager attempts in socialization. Friends. The people who only remembered to invite her at the last minute.

As she was taking a shower, in preparation for the coming day ahead, it dawned on her how everything was probably going to turn out. She’ll dress up, put on a bit of make-up, add on a plastered smile to at least look presentable and mask the weariness. Then she’d meet her friends around the corner and head for the mall to watch a movie, or to the park, or wherever else they might think of to chill and kill time. A little bit of talk here, a little reminiscing of the past years and a moment of sweet nostalgia there. There they’d go, catching up with whatever hullabaloos, making snide comments, witty remarks, even slightly offensive jokes.

These were the things normal people do. Normal people who don’t have pathetic lives. Normal, interesting, joyous people like these stuff. The thought exhausted her. All the pretense and efforts to look like she was savoring their company just to maintain an up to par and acceptable level of social status was slowly getting her down. Whoever said that this was how it’s supposed to be? Everything was so repetitive and routinary, it feels fake. It’s as if their lives have been pre-dictated, like they were ignorant marionettes with unbreakable strings, forced to dance and play over and over again.

These thoughts continued to occupy her head even as she finished her bath. As she stepped out of the bathroom, she headed straight to her bed, slumped down against her pillows. Hair still dripping, wetting the sheets, she closed her eyes. Maybe she can’t do it after all. For now, she’ll stay in and rest. Just this once, she didn’t have to go through the motions and satisfy society’s presuppositions. Maybe, it’s time to try  to loosen and sever the society’s suffocating leash and bonds on her marionette’s life.

"It was February sixth (twelfth): eight (two) days until Valentine’s Day. I was dateless, as usual, deep in the vice grip of unrequited love. It was bad enough not having a boyfriend for New Year’s Eve. Now I had to cope with Valentine datelessness, feeling consummate social pressure from every retailer in America who stuck hearts and cupids in their windows by January second to rub it in."
Joan Bauer (Thwonk)

I don’t really mind people who don’t read. Maybe they haven’t discovered the beauty of the act, or maybe they just haven’t found the right book yet. What really gets me are those people who look down upon other people who enjoy reading. I despise them for thinking that people who read books are lame. I mean, who the hell are you to tell us that doing what we love most is useless and stupid. Because honestly, I think its more lame that you consider such a mind-consuming and mind-enhancing act as worthless.

"Or about how when you’re a child, to stop you from following the crowd you’re assaulted with the line “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?” but when you’re an adult and to be different is suddenly a crime, people seem to be saying, “Hey. Everyone else is jumping off a bridge. Why aren’t you?"
Steve Toltz (A Fraction of the Whole)

‎”People killin’, people dyin’. Children hurt and you hear them crying..

..With ongoing sufferin’ as the youth die young, ask yourself is the lovin’ really gone?”

——-

Today 20 children from Newtown, Conneticut aged 5-10 years old have been robbed of their lives. Such precious souls have lost their chance to a future of infinite possibilities. Those were kids who were full of dreams, vitality, and innocence. In what crazy world does anyone have the right to steal those away? Has our society completely spiraled into this dark harrowing insanity? What extremes does people reach to be capable of such inhumane thing, to completely ignore their morality?

I know that no words would ever be enough to console all those families who’ve lost a great deal during this tragedy. I know that the pain will continue to haunt them no matter how hard they try. The gaping hole this incident left in their hearts might not ever be filled up again even with time. This is a really terrible event, not only for those who are directly involved, but for everyone in this world. Our hearts go out to, you, the parents and relatives of the children victimized during this grave encounter.

Today, is a deeply depressing day for everyone, for this kind of thing could have happened to anyone. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I may not be able to imagine the entirety of your pain, but just know that I understand how hard it is to lose someone so precious. And I know that times are difficult right now, but I wish that in time, you’ll find justice for these kids, and peace.

Hold up, it’s me, the fat kid, reading Fat Kid Rules The World. Hahaha. Okay, forgive my sudden craziness right there.
So here goes: When you are a 300-pound kid, it is not surprising that you feel bad about yourself. Living in our society with that kind of weight means endless fat jokes and harsh taunts. People will notice you no matter what and they would always have that disgusted look plastered on their faces as they take in you enormous state. And that is how Troy Billings came to the decision of jumping in front of an incoming train. Life might be better if it just ends.
But then Troy never got to experience the peaceful afterlife. Not when Curt MacCrae, the coolest semi-homeless punk guitarist dropout of their school, prevent him from stepping off the ledge. Suddenly, it’s biggest(literally) loser meets cool punk-rock guitarist. Friendship blossomed as Curt recruited Troy to be the drummer of his band. Things then started turning around and Troy was enjoying life, not that he forgets about his bodily burden. Together, the two hopes to change the world through punk music as they prepare for their biggest first performance.
I am still halfway through the book and I am so much hooked. I mean, being fat myself, I understand the problems that Troy is going through. I can feel the sting whenever people around him threw uncomfortable glances as he pass by. I can feel the despair he felt being a loner because of his body. But then this isn’t a pity story about a fat kid. Somehow, I feel a twist coming up especially with Curt. There is just something about him that seems wrong. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to finish the book first in order to unravel the mystery.

Uhm, sorry to burst your bubble, but actually, not all girls are as shallow as you.
You know what a better dream would be for girls?
It’s to be accepted by the society no matter how much food they eat or pounds they gain. Why should every girl be subjected to the pressure of being stick-thin? Why can’t other people understand the fact that there are different body types for every person? And why can’t we eat whatever hell we want without other people butting in? Ugh.

"We keep people alive on death row just so we can kill them later. We put prisoners on suicide watch so they can’t do themselves in before we can get the chance to put them on trial. That doesn’t make any sense. Why is it okay to put someone to death, but it’s not okay for those people to do it themselves?"
Michael Thomas Ford (Suicide Notes)

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Insurgent is the second book in the Divergent trilogy written by Veronica Roth. If you haven’t read the first book, you might as well read this review first and pick up the said book for, surely, you wouldn’t understand this post. This would also seem to be a huge spoiler for the first book. So I suggest that you stop reading this now. But if you have already read Divergent, I can safely assume that you already know the story and that it ends with a cliff-hanger.

This second installment is the continuation of Tris and Four’s journey to unravel the secrets of their personality and the society they are in. Now that a war is beginning to ensue due to the Erudite’s inhumane move to control the Dauntless using simulation, the factions are on the edge of being destroyed. The conflicts in beliefs and interest among the different factions have caused unimaginable terrors to everyone. Being Divergent and the only people not affected by Erudite’s mind control, Tris, Four and the others must decide who to side with in order to stop the oncoming war. Do they try to stand by the remaining loyal Dauntless and the factionless or ally with the person who they so very hated? But would it be easy to choose when one aims to destroy the peace in order to eliminate the factions for a new regime while the other option is to betray the one you love in order to know the truth behind the formation of the society you live in? And even more so, what would you do when the one you love with all your heart refuses to agree with your choice.

After almost a year of waiting for this to come out, I must say I was generously pleased and satisfied with what I’ve read. Insurgent continued exactly where Divergent left off and the transition was very smooth. It is much more action-packed than the first book and also, much more tragic. But nevertheless, I never could put it down, much like with the first book.

There are a lot of things I really like about Insurgent. First is that in this second book, readers would get a good glimpse of the other factions. With Divergent, we only got to know more about the Dauntless and Abnegation, and the evil side of Erudite. Here, we will get a better view of how Candor, Amity and, Erudite functions. Readers will get a chance to know about each faction’s quirks, traditions and belief. We will see both the positive and negative sides of each faction that would really make it hard for us to judge them as purely good and purely evil.

And in that comes the second reason why I enjoy the book. Yes, this ay very well be intended for young adults, but I think that the book’s message is for all. While reading the book, I got to know more about each of the characters, and it was so hard to decide whether I like them or not. They have good traits and then the bad one which makes me want to just kill them. And I guess the author captured reality very well in this case. She was able to reflect people as close as possible to what they really are. We aren’t blacks and white. No one is purely evil and purely good. We are a combination of both. Grays. It just depends on how we choose to act on these parts of us. Some may drift to the negative while some, choose to stick with the positive.

The third reason why I like this book is that its political and societal issues are very thought-provoking. I mean, for all we know, this could be our future. We might be divided according to our beliefs and our personalities. The author made a world in which people choose how they want to be, how they will live their lives depending on character. The Dauntless are courageous, seeking thrill in action and adventure. The Candor values truth above all and despise any form of lying. The Abnegation are selfless people, putting the need of others first before their own. The Erudite are those who thrive to learn, forever seeking knowledge and making innovation. And then the Amity are those who wants nothing more but peace, and believes that unity is important above all else. Yes, at first I tried to categorize myself into one of these factions. But in this second book, the focus was on the Divergent and the factionless, people who aren’t sorted into any of these categories. I admire how the author wrote about them. These people represent those who can be more than just one of those factions. People cannot really be wired to just one personality. No. I mean, could we not also be brave while being selfless at the same time? Does seeking knowledge and information hinder us from being peaceful? We are complex creatures incapable of being caged into just one way of living. Our character isn’t just made up of one trait. We are much more diverse that the factions, which is supposed to put things in order, also became the reason for problems to arise.

And lastly, of course is the love story of Tris and Four. Insurgent showed how realistic Tobias and Tris’ relationship is despite its dystopian genre. In most books, couples re portrayed all lovey-dovey and perfect. Here, we would see the imperfection when certain circumstances force them to disagree with each other and argue. There were even some points in which I thought they would be over because of all the bickering. And I guess it’s nice because that’s how relationships are in real life. Couples have misunderstandings, they argue. And overcoming those trials is what make the bond stronger. And that is how love is portrayed in this book. Imperfect but real.

All in all, I very much loved it, I think more than I loved Divergent. I cannot put the book down because I wanted to know what will happen next, immediately. I stayed up very late because of this book. I always have this fear that sequels would somehow fail my expectations, but this one did not. There were predictable plot twists but some are actually shocking. I suggest you don’t get too attached to any of the characters for surely, you will regret it after the next few chapters. Also, be ready to laugh, cry and be giddy for this book has it all. Oh yeah, the sarcastic humor is another great factor in this book. I give it my full 5/5. And seriously, the ending is such a fucking cliff-hanger. What will I do? The next book isn’t due until 2013. Damn.

Day 13 – Your favorite writer

JOHN MICHAEL GREEN

Now, this has been a very tough decision to make. I had a hard time choosing between JK Rowling and John Green. As most of you know, I am very much in love with the Harry Potter series, to such extent that I consider it a vital part of my life.

But then I made my decision and I think that John Green deserves this one. Of course, these two authors have very different writing styles and genre. But I have yet to prove JK Rowling’s writing since she only has the Harry Potter series to show. And hey, I am not saying it’s not good, I adore those books! It’s just that I haven’t had a taste of her other works to prove that I certainly love all of her writings.

So back to John Green. This man is my idol. I have all his books and have finished reading every single one of them. What I love most about him is that he has the talent to make the most ordinary and geekiest, quirkiest character lovable. May it be Miles, Will Grayson, Augustus Waters or Collin, he never fails to make them more interesting. He makes readers realize that it is okay to be yourself, that being unique and true is very much acceptable. He doesn’t have to create perfect gorgeous and dashing characters just so the readers can swoon. No. John Green’s characters are loved because of their honest ways in life. They do not have to hide behind pretentious identities to be appreciated by the readers. They are not wanna-be snobs who think that the most important thing in the world is to be hot and popular. His books are good for teenagers as they show the real hardships encountered by the teenage population, without the exaggeration. His stories would seem simple in the beginning but with a mind blowing spin, and sometimes tragic, at the ending.

Aside from that, John Green and his brother, Hank, is very well know in the internet world for their video blogs. They have fans called Nerdfighters (I am one of them) that aims to decrease the level of world suck by sharing important information about the world. This made me love this author even more since they strive to open the eyes of people that it is not a bad thing to a nerd, to be smart. They show people that being a nerd can be fun and exciting. They reveal the nastiness of the “popular” world. They advocate intelligence and knowledge against the ever present shallowness and superficialness of the society. They show people that using our brains is much more worth it than constantly striving to look pretty and cool.
